From Classroom to Kitchen: La Joya ISD Students Gain Real-World Experience Through CTE Summer Bridge Program

Mission, TX - Learning extends far beyond the classroom for students participating in La Joya ISD's Career and Technical Education (CTE) Summer Bridge Program. Through hands-on work-based learning experiences, students are stepping into professional environments, applying classroom concepts, and developing the skills needed to succeed in today's workforce.
This week, students enrolled in the Principles of Hospitality & Tourism program had the opportunity to work alongside the Child Nutrition Services team at Juarez-Lincoln High School, where they gained firsthand experience in the daily operations of a professional food service environment. Under the leadership of educator Myranda Perez, students explored the fast-paced world of food service while learning the importance of teamwork, organization, and customer-focused service.
Throughout the experience, students participated in a variety of food preparation and kitchen support tasks, including bagging apples, portioning tater tots, washing dishes, wrapping chicken sandwiches, and preparing fried rice. While these responsibilities may seem simple, each task provided valuable lessons in food safety and sanitation, time management, quality control, efficiency, and workplace professionalism.
The experience offered students a behind-the-scenes look at the planning, coordination, and dedication required to prepare and serve nutritious meals to hundreds of students each day. By working directly with experienced Child Nutrition Services professionals, students gained a greater appreciation for the critical role food service teams play in supporting student success and campus operations."Work-based learning experiences give students the opportunity to see how classroom instruction translates into real careers," said Melinda Flores, Executive Director of College & Career Success for La Joya ISD. "By partnering with departments across our district, students are able to build technical skills, develop confidence, and explore career pathways in meaningful ways. These authentic experiences help prepare them for success in college, career, and life."
The CTE Summer Bridge Program is designed to connect students with industry professionals and workplace environments where they can strengthen leadership, communication, and employability skills while gaining valuable career exposure. Experiences such as this help students make informed decisions about their futures and better understand the expectations and opportunities within their chosen fields.
Through innovative programs and meaningful partnerships, La Joya ISD continues to create learning experiences that empower students to become future-ready graduates. These opportunities directly support Priority 2 of the district's Achieving Excellence Together: 2030 Strategic Plan: Empowered Graduates, ensuring students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and real-world experiences necessary to thrive in an ever-changing workforce.
